Mammogram FAQs

A mammogram is an imaging procedure that most commonly utilizes low-dose x-rays to create a detailed image of the breast, internal anatomical structures and any cancerous growths. The most common use for this test by far are detection/diagnosis. There are two types of mammograms:  Screening Mammograms which check if you’re at risk or not already having disease; And Diagnostic mammograms which are done when someone has symptoms like pain in their chest or unexplained redness.

The mammogram process is as simple and straightforward. It only takes about 30 minutes from beginning to end, with no recovery period. Discomfort is limited to breast compression which is necessary to reduce radiation emissions and overlapping shadows.

Radiologists must report any suspicious finding, which can result in false positives. However, to avoid missing cancers, patients should always follow up and return for additional images.

You should bring any films you have from previous mammograms for comparison. If you do not have the films, it may delay your readings because they will need to be requested.

Those who have health insurance may find that their insurance will cover the entire cost of a preventative mammogram. Others may have to pay an insurance deductible before the test. If you are paying out of pocket, the prices will vary depending on what facility you visit.
